How many times have you entered a place of business and had to fight your way through a cloud of cigarette smoke? One of the most frequent complaints made to Shasta County’s cheap cigarettes Violation Hotline is business entryway smoke. This smoke cigarettes is not only annoying, it is unhealthy. For many years U.S. Surgeons General have advised the public that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

A recent poll showed that 95 percent of the Anderson respondents favor prohibiting smoking cigarettes within 20 feet of business entryways. This is not surprising, given the fact that 83 percent of Anderson residents are non-smokers.

Area merchants are responding to residents’ concerns. Almost 60 Anderson businesses have enacted voluntary 20-foot policies. City Council Member James Yarbrough, who has posted 20-foot smoking cigarettes ban signs at his place of business, is very pleased with the results. “Before, customers would walk up smoking cigarettes and place their lit cigarettes on the ledge. They’d leave them there burning while they were transacting their business and then come out and try to figure out which one was theirs.” It’s much better now, he reports, “They see the signs, stay 20 feet away to finish their cigarettes, and put them out further away.”

In 2004, California implemented a 20-foot ban on smoking cigarettes around entrances, exits, operable windows, and ventilation systems of all government buildings. Many local jurisdictions have enacted similar policies, with entryway smoking cigarettes bans ranging from 20 to 50 feet. The State’s decision to enact a 20-foot policy was prompted by University of California research determining a minimum of 20 feet as adequate to protect against cancer-causing particles in secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke cigarettes has been classified as a Class A carcinogen – the same category as asbestos and radon – for 10 years. Regulations prohibiting smoke cigarettes indoors have been enacted throughout California, yet the public still faces situations where they are exposed to secondhand smoke. It used to be thought that smoking cigarettes outside was safe. Studies, however, have shown that secondhand smoke cigarettes is just as deadly outdoors as indoors. Instead of disappearing into the atmosphere, the poisonous gases and particles, which are heavier than air, sink closer to the ground, to be breathed in by those who pass by.
