Reactions Mixed On Plan To Ban Smoking In Sarasota Parks

Smoking could soon be prohibited in Sarasota city parks in a plan drawing cheers from some but concerns from homeless advocates.

Sarasota city commissioners gave preliminary approval for the smoking cigarettes ban and are expected to take the issue up again for a second reading that will also include a ban around some city buildings.

Bill Robertson says he thinks the ban is "wonderful."

"I think they're entitled to smoke cigarettes in their own homes but if it infringes on me or my kids, it bothers me," he said.

But the idea isn't sitting well with some.

"It sounds like an infringement on people's rights to do what they want in a public outdoor space," said Derek Moore, a former smoker. "I suspect its likely intent is to drive out the homeless because past attempts have failed."

City officials recently removed benches from Five Points Park in downtown, and the combination of the two strikes some as going too far and targeting the homeless.

"There's been sort of this battleground if you will and there's been a number of initiatives to do anything they can to remove people from the park," said Richard Martin, executive director of the Partnership to End Homelessness, which operates in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

However, deputy Sarasota manager Marlon Brown said the smoking cigarettes ban is not about the homeless.
"It's about smoking cigarettes in all parks, the effects of secondhand smoke, the effects of secondhand smoke cigarettes on kids," Brown said. "It's just a health issue. It has nothing to do specifically with the homeless." Brown said people may tie the issues together because commissioners plan to take up the issue of the benches again three months after the smoking cigarettes ban goes into effect to evaluate how things are going. If the ban is approved on a second reading it would go into effect immediately.
