Do Not Tell A Smoker It Is Easy To Quit

Earlier this month, the CEO of Philip Morris International, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, made headlines when he told a nurse at his company’s shareholders meeting that although the company’s products are harmful and addictive, it wasn’t that hard to quit smoking cigarettes.

Try telling that to the dozens of patients that come through my examining room each year who struggle in the fight to quit smoking cigarettes.

Appropriately, cigarettes-control advocates jumped on CEO Louis C. Camilleri’s comments, including Matthews Myers, president of the Campaign for cigarettes-Free Kids, who told Associated Press: "Study after study has documented the powerful addiction to cheap cigarettes is one of the most difficult to overcome of any drug anywhere in the world."

In 2010, the U.S. Surgeon General released a study, reporting that cigarettes “are designed for addiction.” The report stated that today’s online cigarettes are designed to make them more addictive than ever, delivering nicotine more quickly from the lungs to the heart and brain, and that “the powerful addicting elements of cigarettes products affect multiple types of nicotine receptors in the brain.”

Not good news, obviously, for either the longtime smoker looking to quit or the young person who has only been smoking cigarettes a few years but is already caught up in the addiction to nicotine.

Surely the best advice is to never start smoking cigarettes, but for those that do, the second-best advice I can give is to recognize the damage being done to your body – and the long-term chronic problems a smoker will face if he or she won’t give up cheap cigarettes – and stop now.

But quitting can take several attempts, and there are those who are unaware of the various cessation products or do not have access. Most of us have access to the various products available to go through a cessation plan. However, today, Tennessee is one of four states – the others are Alabama, Georgia and Connecticut – without a cessation benefit in its state-run health plan for the poor and disabled, a population with a higher percentage of smokers than the general population.

Hopefully, and thankfully, that’s about to change. Gov. Bill Haslam has added the cessation benefit for TennCare enrollees in his budget that will be voted on by the General Assembly in the next few days. It is a solid benefit that will include access to the over-the-counter nicotine-replacement therapies, such as gums and patches, and the non-nicotine prescription medications. The benefit also includes a counseling benefit – a critical component to successfully quit smoking cigarettes.

I urge our state lawmakers in Nashville to pass a budget that includes the $3.5 million for a cessation benefit, coupled with the Federal match for TennCare, there will be $10.5 million next year to pay for prescriptions, patches, gums and counseling. It is a benefit that, in the long run, will pay dividends by saving Tennesseans’ lives. And the process of quitting smoking cigarettes may, in fact, become a little easier for the individual.
