Battle Against Cigarettes

Malaysia usually trails the US when it comes to trends, whether it’s in technology, business or the arts. But one area where we are ahead of the US is in requiring cigarette brands to carry gruesome images on cigarette packs. US federal health officials in early November unveiled plans to do just that. This is hailed by American anti-smoking cigarettes advocates as the biggest initiative in the battle against cigarettes since 1964 when the surgeon general first declared Buy Cigarettes Online a public health threat.

"When the rule takes effect, the health consequences of smoking cigarettes will be obvious every time someone picks up a pack of cigarettes," say FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg. But not everyone is impressed. "Pictures on cigarette packs is a totally inadequate federal response," says John F. Banzhaf III, a professor of public health law at George Washington University who runs the activist group Action on Smoking and Health.

I agree for I don’t personally know of anyone quitting smoking discount cigarettes because of some disgusting pictures on cigarette packs. What happens is probably a combination of two things. The first is acclimatisation. After some initial disgust, the cigarette smokers get over it and are able to ignore the images. The second is indignation. They don’t like anyone treating them like ignoramuses who don’t know that smoking discount cigarettes is hazardous to health.

Still, something has to be done to curb the scourge of smoking cigarettes. The annual death toll linked to Cheap Cigarettes Online is more than five million. The World Health Organisation (WHO) rightly describes cigarettes online use as "one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced".

It’s bad enough that cigarette kills those who smoke it, but it also kills innocent bystanders. A new study, published in the British medical journal Lancet, on the global impact of second-hand cigarette smoke found that it kills more than 600,000 people worldwide annually. Analysing data from 192 countries, researchers estimate that passive cigarette smoking causes about 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 deaths from lower respiratory disease, 36,900 deaths from asthma and 21,400 deaths from lung cancer a year.

"This helps us understand the real toll of cigarettes," says Armando Peruga, a programme manager at the WHO’s Tobacco-Free Initiative, which led the study. But such statistics have no impact on smokers, any more than the message that "narcotics kill" would have on drug addicts. You can also cite facts like cigarette smoke contains at least 50 chemicals known to be carcinogenic. You can even try logic on them like, "Why pay to consume something that ruins your breath, stains your teeth and ultimately kills you and those around you?"

Cigarette smokers are still going to smoke cigarettes. The only way to curb this nasty habit is to make it extremely expensive for them to continue doing so. The price for a pack of 20 cigarettes is about RM10 after a price increase of about 70 sen in October. That doesn’t go far enough. It’s said that once a cigarette smoker, always a cigarette smoker and that raising the price of cigarettes won’t curb cigarette smoking, but rather, only pose a financial burden for those in the lower-income bracket, which many cigarette smokers apparently belong to.

Everyone has a breaking point. If RM10 a pack is a financial burden what is say, RM20 a pack? A heavy financial burden? How about RM30? Will it then be prohibitively costly? If not, how about RM50 a pack? At some point, the cigarette smoker will give up and say, I can't afford this habit. If the government is serious about curbing cigarettes smoking, it should make cigarettes not only costly but also prohibitively so. Think about it. If the government can impose up to 300% taxes on some brands of cars why not impose at least that much on cigarettes?
